Alteryx alternative for teams who only ever used the prep step
Alteryx Designer is a Windows desktop application for building end to end analytics workflows on a drag and drop canvas. Most seats are not used that way. A large share of them get bought, renewed and defended for one recurring job: dedupe a file, fix the dates, standardize the company names. Datauntangler does that job on its own.
The short answer
Keep Alteryx if you build scheduled multi source workflows, spatial analysis or predictive models on the canvas. Replace it with Datauntangler if the reason a named user license sits on your renewal is deduplicating and standardizing files, because that is one screen here and it comes with a row level record of what changed.
Datauntangler compared with Alteryx
Every row is a public, category level fact you can check on Alteryx's own site. What this table deliberately leaves out is set out further down the page.
| Alteryx Designer | Datauntangler | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Windows desktop, macOS only inside a virtual machine | Any browser, nothing installed |
| Built for | End to end workflows: blend, prep, analyze, predict, publish | One job, cleaning and deduplicating a file |
| How you drive it | A canvas you assemble from a library of several hundred tools | Proposed changes you approve or reject |
| Duplicate matching | Fuzzy Match and Unique tools you configure yourself | Email, normalized identity and fuzzy passes, run for you |
| Record of what changed | The workflow is the record, not the individual rows | A row level audit log you export as its own CSV |
| Scheduling and sharing | Yes, with Server or the cloud platform alongside it | No, you run the pass when the file arrives |
| Licensing | Per named user, annual, quoted by their sales team | Published plans, priced by rows and seats |
| Time to first clean file | Days to weeks to get productive on the canvas | Minutes, there is one screen and one diff |
What Alteryx is genuinely better at
Breadth, and repeatability across systems. A Designer canvas can pull from dozens of connectors, join them, run a spatial or predictive step, and write the result back out, and the same canvas will do it again next month without anyone reopening a spreadsheet. Nothing on this page replaces that. If your prep is one node in a workflow that also reads a warehouse, scores a model and publishes a dashboard, you want the platform.
It also handles volume a browser will not touch. Designer is engineered for files far larger than the machine memory available to it, which matters when the input is tens of millions of rows. Our demo caps out at about 20,000 rows because it runs inside your browser tab, and the paid plans are priced by row for the same reason.
And it is a skill people hire for. An analyst who knows the canvas is faster at an unfamiliar problem than a single purpose tool will ever be, because the canvas has a tool for almost anything.
Why a Designer license often gets bought for a cleaning job
The pattern is consistent enough to be predictable. Someone in finance or operations gets handed a monthly export that is wrong in the same four ways every time. They try to fix it in Excel, the formulas sprawl, and somebody suggests Alteryx because the analytics team already has it. A seat gets added. Two years later that seat is on the renewal, and the workflow it runs is a Unique tool, a Fuzzy Match, a Data Cleansing tool and a date parse.
That is a real problem and the tool solves it. It is also an enterprise analytics platform being used as a spreadsheet cleaner, and it carries the cost, the Windows requirement and the learning curve of the platform. Alteryx does not publish a public price for Designer and quotes through its sales team, so we are not going to put a number here, but the gap between a per named user analytics license and a per seat cleaning tool is not subtle.
The honest test is whether anyone on your team opens the canvas for anything else. If the answer is no, the seat is paying platform rates for the data cleaning software slice of it.
The four prep jobs that make up most of that workflow
Removing duplicates that are not identical
The Unique tool matches exactly, so near duplicates survive it. Both products fall back on fuzzy scoring for that, ours as a pass you approve rather than a tool you configure.
Standardizing names and companies
Case, punctuation, accents and legal suffixes such as Inc and Ltd, applied consistently down a column instead of by formula.
Parsing dates, currencies and leading zeros
The four date formats in one column, the currency symbols, and the ZIP codes an export turned into integers.
Proving what the pass did
The place a canvas is weakest. It records the process, not the individual rows it altered, which is a problem when a number has to be defended later.
The difference that actually shows up in a review
A workflow tells you what was supposed to happen. It does not tell you that row 1,847 had its company name changed from Ferreira Group Ltd to Ferreira Group, or that two records were collapsed into one because their emails matched after case folding. When a controller or an auditor asks why a customer count dropped by 312 between two reports, the canvas is not the answer to that question.
Datauntangler proposes every change as a diff before anything is applied. You approve or reject at the row level, and what you decided is written into an audit log you export as its own CSV and hand to the person asking. That is the whole reason the product exists, and it is the one thing on this page we would defend against any tool in the category. The matching method behind it is explained on fuzzy matching, and collapsing a whole cluster to a single surviving record is entity resolution.
What switching does not get you
No connectors and no scheduling. Datauntangler works on a file you have. It does not read your warehouse, it does not write back to Salesforce or HubSpot, and it will not run at 6am on a Monday without you. If any of those three are load bearing, a browser tool is the wrong shape and you should stay where you are or look at a platform.
No analytics either. There is no predictive step, no spatial toolkit and no reporting. Cleaning the file is the entire product. Teams whose mess lives inside a CRM rather than in a file are better served by CRM data cleansing, and the wider category comparison sits on the data cleaning tool page itself.

The limits of this comparison, stated on the page
A comparison page written by one of the two products is worth exactly as much as what it admits.
No prices for Alteryx
We have not verified their pricing page today, and a stale price quoted by a competitor is worse than no price at all.
No scores and no stars
There is no rating on this page, in the markup or anywhere else on this site, because there are no reviews behind one.
Category facts only
Every row of the table is something published on their own site: what it runs on, how it is licensed, how you drive it.
