KNIME alternative for cleaning files without wiring a single node
KNIME Analytics Platform is a free, open source desktop application for building data workflows out of nodes. It is capable and it is honest software. It also asks you to design, test and maintain a workflow for a job that, for most finance and operations teams, is the same dedupe and standardize pass every month. DataUntangler does that pass without the workflow.
The short answer
Keep KNIME if you have an analyst who builds and maintains workflows, needs connectors to databases, or runs machine learning and automation. Pick DataUntangler if the workflow you actually run is Duplicate Row Filter, a string similarity join and a date parse, because that is one screen here, near duplicates are matched for you, and the result comes with a row level record of every change.
Run the whole tool on a messy file before you compare
Nothing to install. Load a sample or drop your own CSV and read the diff.
1. Load a file
Your file is read on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can leak.
Or start from a messy sample

Drop a CSV or pick one of the messy samples. Every proposed change appears here as a line you approve or reject.
2. Review every change
Nothing approved yet.
Nothing is applied to your file until you approve it, and your original file is never modified.

Want this on every file, and on bigger ones?
The free try is one file of your own. The Analyst plan cleans as many files as you need, up to 25MB and about 100,000 rows each, for $59 a month or $348 a year.
3. Take the result
The cleaned CSV contains only the changes you approved. The log lists every change, approved or not.
DataUntangler compared with KNIME
Every row is a public, category level fact you can check on KNIME's own site. What this table deliberately leaves out is set out further down the page.
| KNIME Analytics Platform | DataUntangler | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Desktop install on Windows, macOS or Linux | Any browser, nothing installed |
| License | Open source (GPLv3), no charge for the desktop app | Paid plan, with a browser demo to try it first |
| How you drive it | A workflow you build from nodes and configure one by one | Proposed changes you approve or reject |
| Removing exact duplicates | Duplicate Row Filter node on the columns you choose | Run for you, after normalizing case, spaces and accents |
| Near duplicate matching | Assembled from string distance and similarity search nodes | Email, normalized identity and fuzzy passes, run for you |
| Record of what changed | The workflow shows the steps, not each altered row | A row level audit log you export as its own CSV |
| Scheduling and sharing | Paid Pro, Team and Business Hub plans add it | No, you run the pass when the file arrives |
| Who can run it next month | Someone who understands the workflow | Anyone who can open a CSV and read a diff |
What KNIME is genuinely better at
Almost everything that is not cleaning a single file. KNIME lists more than 300 data sources and services it connects to, and a workflow can read a database, join it to a spreadsheet, run a Python or R step, train a model and write the result somewhere else. Nothing on this page does any of that. If your data work is a pipeline rather than a file, stay on the platform.
It is also free to download and use, and the license is open source. For a team with more time than budget, that is a real advantage and we are not going to pretend otherwise. KNIME sells Pro, Team and Business Hub plans on top for running workflows on a schedule, deploying them and collaborating, but the desktop builder itself costs nothing.
And it scales further than a browser tab. KNIME runs on your own machine with memory you allocate to it (its documentation suggests about half of what the machine has), so a multi million row table is a normal day for it. Our browser demo tops out at about 20,000 rows, and the Analyst plan takes files of about 100,000 rows each.
Why a free tool can still be the expensive option
The license is free. The workflow is not. Somebody has to decide which nodes to use, configure the Duplicate Row Filter on the right columns, work out how to catch Acme Corp against Acme Corporation, test it on last month, and fix it the first time the export adds a column. The KNIME forum has years of threads from people doing exactly that for address and company name duplicates, and the answers are good, but each one is an afternoon.
That cost lands on one person. When the analyst who built the workflow leaves or moves teams, the monthly file goes back to Excel because nobody else can read the canvas with confidence. It is a common story behind a switch to a single purpose cleaner, and it is often the real reason they search for an alternative to a tool that does not cost anything.
So price the time, not the license. If one pass takes a trained analyst twenty minutes and an untrained colleague never, the workflow is fine. If it takes a controller an hour of nervous checking every month, a paid tool that shows every proposed change on one screen is cheaper by the second month. That is the comparison on data cleaning software in general, and it is sharper here because KNIME is so capable.
The monthly cleaning workflow, node by node, and what replaces it
Duplicate Row Filter
Removes rows that are identical on the columns you pick. It will not see JOSE MUNOZ and Jose Munoz as the same person unless you add normalization nodes in front of it. Here, case, spacing and accents are folded before matching as a matter of course.
String distance and similarity search
The usual way to find near duplicates on a KNIME canvas, with a threshold you choose and tune. Here the fuzzy matching threshold is calibrated for precision and every proposed pair is shown with the reason it matched.
String Manipulation and date parsing
Expressions to trim, recase, strip legal suffixes and read four date formats in one column. Here those fixes are proposed per row, and you approve them in bulk or one at a time.
A writer node and a note in a ticket
KNIME writes the cleaned table. Explaining which rows changed is left to you. Here the cleaned CSV and a separate change log are both downloads, and the log is what you hand the person who asks.
The near duplicate step is the one that takes longest to get right on a canvas, and it is the one we spend most care on. How the scoring works, what counts as a close name and company match, and why two different email addresses are never merged is explained on fuzzy matching.
Should you pick KNIME or Alteryx for data cleaning?
If the choice really is between the two platforms, the split is fairly clean. KNIME costs nothing to start, runs natively on a Mac, and rewards someone who likes building. Alteryx Designer is a paid Windows application licensed per named user through its sales team, and it is often described as the smoother experience for analysts who want vendor support and a large community behind them. Both are canvases, both need a builder, and both record the process rather than the individual rows they altered.
The question worth asking before either one is whether you need a canvas at all. If the only thing the workflow does is dedupe and standardize one file, you are choosing which platform to overbuy. We wrote up that case for Alteryx seats on the Alteryx alternative page, and the same logic holds here. If the workflow also blends systems, schedules itself and feeds a model, pick the platform that suits your team and stop reading.
Who switches, and who should not
The people who move a cleaning job off KNIME tend to be the ones who inherited it: a finance lead, a RevOps manager, an operations analyst handed a workflow they did not build, for a file that has to be right before it is loaded into the CRM or the general ledger. For them, proposed changes they can read are worth more than a canvas they cannot. When the file is a contact export, the same pass is CRM data cleansing, and collapsing matched records into one survivor is entity resolution.
The people who should stay are anyone whose workflow reads from a database, runs unattended, or does anything after the cleaning. DataUntangler has no connectors, no scheduling and no analytics, and it will not have them on any plan. It works on a file you have, which is the whole product and also the whole limit. If you are not sure which group you are in, drop your worst monthly file into the data cleaning tool at the top of this page and see whether the diff covers what your workflow does.
The limits of this comparison, stated on the page
A comparison page written by one of the two products is worth exactly as much as what it admits.
No prices for KNIME
We have not verified their pricing page today, and a stale price quoted by a competitor is worse than no price at all.
No scores and no stars
There is no rating on this page, in the markup or anywhere else on this site, because there are no reviews behind one.
Category facts only
Every row of the table is something published on their own site: what it runs on, how it is licensed, how you drive it.
